About Me
Hi and thanks for visiting my site! My name is Claire Auger and I’m a college student and medieval studies major (art history minor), currently living in Washington, DC.
I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember, progressing from hours spent tracing horses in kindergarten to four years of high school art classes, which culminated in my decision to pursue art as seriously as possible in my free time. Although drawing is my first love, within the past few years I’ve begun to pursue acrylic painting, and I’ve also experimented with linoleum block printing, pastels, mixed media, watercolor, and most recently, calligraphy. Some people might say that my love of so many different media and pursuit of several different styles is a detriment, but I think it’s helped me to grow as an artist. Because I do not limit myself to one narrow area of speciality, I am free to depict a subject in the way that suits it best and I can explore any given subject more thoroughly. For example, the personality and appearance of my Beagle puppy Lucy is best-suited to a bright, pop-art style of painting, while a drawing of Dublin Castle suggests a more realistic and precise style.
In high school, my artwork was selected twice for the biannual “Celebration of the Arts,” a juried show put on by the Archdiocese of Baltimore to showcase the talent of local student artists, musicians, dancers, and actors. At the end of my senior year, I was one of two finalists for my school’s annual Senior Art Award.
My favorite artists include Vincent van Gogh, Jan Vermeer, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Andy Warhol–a rather diverse group. I’m also fascinated by medieval manuscript illumination (The Book of Kells makes me weak in the knees) and my artistic pipe dream is to someday illuminate my own Book of Hours in an authentic medieval style (but maybe not in Latin).
The time I don’t spend making art (which is a lot more of my time than I’d like, at the moment) I generally spend reading, writing, wasting time on the Internet, cooking and eating pasta, and explaining why I chose an oddball major like “medieval studies” and what on earth I intend to do with it after graduation (answer: not teach). It’s an exciting life.
